Tata Group’s subsidiary Tata Digital was working on an app dubbed the Super App for months. The application has finally arrived on the Play Store and iTunes. Within a week of its launch, Neu has been downloaded by more than a million users.
What is Neu, aka the Super app? Tata group owns several eCommerce sites. For example, the Tata Cliq website lets you buy apparel, electronics, etc. Croma is a site where you can buy phones, laptops, furniture, etc. Tata Group has a majority stake in the grocery shopping app BigBasket. It had also purchased a significant stake in online healthcare service 1mg. By launching Tata Neu, it is now directly in competition with eCommerce giants Flipkart and Amazon as users have more choices when it comes to products, and users don’t have to visit different sites.
Is the new application an excellent alternative to other eCommerce apps in India? What Tata services are supported by Neu? Here’s our review of the latest mobile eCommerce application of Tata Group.
Tata Neu review (Super app)
The Tata Neu app’s size is 53 megabytes, and the app takes 150 megabytes of storage memory when you install it.
Registration, UI, and features
To use the Neu app, you must log in by entering the phone number and the OTP. When you do so, Neu opens its interface. The interface shows offers, options to scan & pay, send money, pay bills, and open the finance section. Neu also displays the following categories:
- Grocery, electronics, mobiles.
- Fashion, beauty, luxury.
- Hotels, flights, eat & drink.
- Health, entertainment, etc.
When you tap on any categories, you’ll see a store selling the items belonging to the chosen category. For instance, if you tap on the “mobile” category, you’ll see a list of mobiles you can purchase with the Tata Neu app. On the shopping page, you’ll find sort and filter options. You can sort products by relevance, popularity, expiring soon, or recently arrived. Neu allows you to filter products by brand, category, expiry date, offer type, sub-brand, and sub-category. You can “favorite” a product if you want to buy it later or want to shortlist it.
The interface also shows five tabs – Home, Tata Pay, NeuPass, Offers, and Stories.
Tata Pay: This service lets you send/receive money. You can also make money transfer requests or transfer the money to yourself using Tata Pay. The app can create a QR code, and it can also create a UPI ID for you. It can save your debit card details as well. By launching the Pay service, Tata group now competes with UPI applications such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and others.
NeuPass: This section shows the number of NeuCoins you’ve earned and privileges/memberships of various services you’ve earned by creating your Neu app account. For example, the Tata Neu app unlocked the premium “bbstar” Bigbasket 3 months membership for my BigBasket account. Each service rewards some NeuCoins when you shop worth X Rs on them through the Neu mobile application.
Offers: Like other eCommerce sites, the Tata Neu app has an “offers” section that shows the top offers on various shopping sites owned by Tata Group in one place.
Stories: The Stories section of the Neu app for Android and iOS shows articles published on the Tata Digital website. You can bookmark the stories or search for stories by their name in the application.
Neu coins: When you purchase something with the new Tata app, you may get Neu coins. If you have a good number of Neu coins, you can buy items on Tata Neu. If you have a few coins only, you can use the coins to get a discount on your new purchase. One Neu coin is equivalent to 1 rupee.
An exciting feature of Neu
The app pulls transaction history from various Tata group-owned eCommerce applications and shows them in the “my orders” section. Like products, transactions are categorized in Neu. Thus, it is easy to find orders.
Good concept: Neu has bought various Tata Digital-owned eCommerce portals together. It is easy to find and purchase products with this app. Another plus point is the application can save card details. If you’ve used at least one of the eCommerce sites of Tata Group once, Neu will automatically fetch the address. Like its competitors, Neu offers cashback in the form of Neu Coins.
Recommends out-of-stock items: Tata Neu can recommend out-of-stock items on its feed interface. When I tapped on one of the offers, the product was out of stock on BigBasket.
Mobile-only: Unlike Flipkart and Amazon, Neu is available for mobile devices only. Flipkart had once experimented with mobile-only eCommerce, which proved disastrous for the company.
Closing words: Neu is an excellent application for people who buy products from Tata-owned companies such as BigBasket, Croma, etc. If you use this app, you don’t have to keep multiple Tata-owned applications on your mobile device, as Neu gives you access to all popular internet services owned by the Tata group. The app is well designed, but it is a bit slow.
